Why You’ll Love This Football Cheese Ball
There are so many reasons this has become one of my favorite easy game-day appetizers.
It’s easy to prepare, can be made ahead of time, feeds a crowd, and looks so cute sitting in the middle of a game-day snack spread.
Plus, it’s loaded with classic flavors like bacon, ranch, cheddar cheese, and cream cheese. What’s not to love?!
You can serve it with crackers, pretzels, fresh vegetables, or a combination of all three, making it an easy addition to just about any football party menu.

Ingredients for a Football Cheese Ball
Here’s everything you’ll need to make this easy bacon ranch football cheese ball:
- 16 ounces cream cheese (2 8-ounce blocks), softened
- 2 tablespoons sour cream
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 ounce ranch seasoning (1 packet)
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- 1/2 cup bacon bits
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce, optional
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Football Cheese Ball Coating
For the outside of the cheese ball, you’ll need:
- 1/3 cup chopped pecans
- 1/2 cup bacon bits
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
- 2 slices white cheese, such as white cheddar, provolone, or Swiss
I used sharp white cheddar for the football laces.

Can You Use Real Bacon?
Absolutely!
You can cook and crumble bacon yourself if you prefer. However, I used bacon bits because they’re so much easier and save an entire step.
And when I’m making several different snacks for a party, I am all about saving a step wherever I can!

How to Make a Football Cheese Ball
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature.
This is important because cold cream cheese will be much harder to combine with the other ingredients.
Add the softened cream cheese, sour cream, shredded cheddar, ranch seasoning, green onions, bacon bits, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce to the bowl of a stand mixer.
Mix everything together until well combined.
You could also use a large mixing bowl and hand mixer if you don’t have a stand mixer.

How to Shape a Cheese Ball Like a Football
Once everything is combined, lightly spray your clean hands with cooking spray. This will help prevent the cheese mixture from sticking to you.
Transfer the mixture onto a clean cutting board, piece of parchment paper, or clean countertop.
Using your hands, gently form the mixture into an oval football shape.
It doesn’t have to be perfect! You can continue adjusting and smoothing the cheese ball until you’re happy with the shape.
Once your football is formed, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours.
I left mine in the refrigerator overnight, which worked perfectly.
Chilling is an important step because you want the cheese ball to be nice and firm before adding the coating.

How to Make the Bacon Ranch Cheese Ball Coating
After the cheese ball has chilled, it’s time to add the delicious coating.
Combine the chopped pecans, bacon bits, and chopped green onions in a shallow dish.
Remove your football cheese ball from the refrigerator and unwrap it.
Gently press the cheese ball into the coating mixture, using your hands as needed to press the bacon, pecans, and green onions onto the surface.
Continue until the entire outside is evenly coated.

How to Make Cheese Football Laces
Now for the part that turns an ordinary cheese ball into the cutest football-shaped appetizer!
Take your slices of white cheese and cut them into thin strips. I used a pizza cutter, which made this incredibly easy.
Arrange one longer strip vertically down the center of the football and add several smaller strips across it to create the look of football laces.
And that’s it!
Such a simple little detail, but it makes the finished cheese ball look so cute on a game-day food table.

Can You Make a Football Cheese Ball Ahead of Time?
Yes—and I actually recommend it!
This is one of the reasons this recipe is perfect for entertaining.
Prepare and shape your cheese ball the night before your party, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate it overnight.
The next day, add the bacon and pecan coating and cheese laces before serving.
Making your appetizers ahead of time means you won’t be stuck in the kitchen trying to prepare everything right before kickoff.
And that’s always a win in my book!

What to Serve With a Football Cheese Ball
Once your football cheese ball is finished, place it in the center of a large serving tray or charcuterie board.
Then surround it with all of your favorite dippers.
Some easy options include:
- Crackers
- Pretzels
- Pretzel crisps
- Tortilla chips
- Pita chips
- Crostini
- Celery
- Carrot sticks
- Bell pepper slices
Using a combination of crackers, pretzels, and vegetables also makes the finished board look extra pretty and gives your guests plenty of options.
Perfect Super Bowl and Game-Day Appetizer
This football cheese ball recipe would be perfect for just about any football-themed gathering.
Make it for a college football Saturday, NFL watch party, tailgate, football-themed birthday party, playoff game, or, of course, your Super Bowl party.
You could even build an entire game-day charcuterie board around it with your favorite dips, wings, sliders, chips, and other football snacks.
Make This Easy Football Cheese Ball for Your Next Party
If you need an easy football appetizer that can be made ahead of time, save this recipe for your next game day!
The combination of cream cheese, cheddar, ranch, bacon, green onions, and pecans makes it incredibly flavorful, while the football shape makes it so much more fun than serving a traditional cheese ball.
Plus, it looks like you put a ton of effort into it when it’s actually incredibly easy to make. And those are always my favorite kinds of recipes!
Serve it alongside crackers, pretzels, and veggies, turn on the game, and enjoy!
And tell me—what’s the one appetizer that absolutely has to be on your game-day spread?!
