Today I am making a DIY mosquito repellent jar, so I thought it would be good to also share the best herbs for mosquito repellent with you all today.
I am using some of them for this DIY jar, so it goes hand in hand to share! I don’t know about you, but during the summer, I get ate up with mosquitoes.
And I’m not talking a bite or two here and there, but literally everywhere! It’s like I am a natural magnet to mosquitoes. They can sniff me out a mile away for some reason.
And the crazy thing is, I can be standing right next to my husband, and he has no bites at all on him! Like how is that even possible?!
I’m pretty sure I get allergic reactions to mosquito bites too because they will swell up like a balloon after! So anytime I am outside, I need all the natural mosquito repellent that I can get!
I don’t like to use chemical bug sprays too often, so this DIY mosquito repellent jar is a great alternative. Plus, you can make it with relatively few materials as well, which is always nice.
And even if you don’t have your own herb garden, you can easily snag a few from your local grocery store to make this easy DIY since they are common herbs.
But, I do think having an herb garden is the best thing to have when it comes to novice gardening. Not only are they good for culinary uses, but in circumstances just like this too!
You can have a delicious fresh herb and insect repellents all in one! So come along with me and see just how easy (and fun!) this DIY mosquito repellent jar is to make!

So What Are The Best Herbs To Keep Pesky Mosquitoes Away?
Lavender
While most humans love the scent of lavender, most mosquitoes find the aroma of lavender unpleasant!
Rosemary
Since Rosemary has such a strong smell, it is very effective at repelling against mosquitoes and other pesky bugs too!
Mint
Mint’s strong scent will keep mosquitoes away due to the menthol aroma it gives out!
Lemon Thyme
Anything with a strong citrusy scent is a guaranteed way to keep the mosquitoes away! They don’t like the lemon scent at all!
Basil
Basil’s strong aroma keeps the mosquitoes away (especially certain varieties like lemon basil and cinnamon basil!).
Sage
You can burn sage to release the smoke which most mosquitoes find to be very repulsive as well!

Materials Needed For DIY Mosquito Repellent Jar
Any of the herbs mentioned above (a combination of them is ideal! I used rosemary and mint. I also added in a few flower blooms just to make it look more pretty and colorful too!)
Wide Mouth Mason Jar
Water

Citrus Essential Oil (you can also use lavender oil, citronella oil, neem oil, or whatever essential oils you have on hand too)
Sliced Lemons
Floating Candle (you can use a real floating candle or a battery operated one. I opted for a battery opted candle, that way I could easily reuse it over and over. I will link the exact ones I used below!)
How To Make Natural Remedy For Mosquito Repellent
First, fill you wide mouth mason jar with water. Be sure not to overfill it, because you will be adding things inside and you don’t want it to spill over!
Then, slice your lemons and add them into the water. After that, add your rosemary in as well. If you’re cutting from your own rosemary plant, be sure to snip the green tips!

That way, your plant will still grow and thrive after you cut some rosemary off! Add in your mint, and whatever other herbs you are using.

I got my herbs from my hardy herb garden that I have out on the porch! Not only are they edible herbs, but they can be used for DIY ideas just like this, which is always an added benefit!

I wanted to add in some lavender too, which I am currently growing, but it hasn’t taken off yet and I didn’t want to cut it too early.
But, the next time I make this DIY jar, I definitely will! After adding in all your herbs and lemon slices, top it off with several drops of citrus essential oil too.

Place your floating candle on top for some ambiance and you’re all set! If you can find some floating citronella candles, that would be even better!

This is such an easy and natural way to make an effective repellent to avoid those itchy bites with! Once you have your jar all assembled, add it to whatever outdoor space you want.
This would be perfect to place by a fire pit. And you can make several jars and space them around outside during this mosquito season!
Enjoy This DIY Mosquito Repellent Jar
As far as mosquito repellents go, this is super easy to make. It’s not necessarily mosquito traps, but it will keep them away and that way you don’t have to deal with any dead mosquitos either!

You can also try to have some mosquito-repellent plants around your outdoor spaces as well to enhance the effectiveness of the repellent jar.
Those types of plants include citronella grass, marigolds, lemon balm plant, catnip, and geranium plants to name a few. They would be some great additions to your outdoor spaces as well.

If you’re like me and love good, natural remedies, then I hope you enjoyed this post. There’s nothing like having natural bug repellents that actually work!
And I hate the way chemical sprays smell, so a natural insect repellent is always my top choice. Hopefully, your next outdoor gathering will have a lot less pesky insects around with this little DIY mosquito repellent jar!
If you make one too, let me know how it works for you! I’d love to hear all about it!
