Ingredients Needed For Applesauce Bars
For this recipe, you will not only be making the bars themselves, but a yummy and crumbly cinnamon spice mixture to sprinkle on top before baking!
You also may be wondering what kind of applesauce should I use for these bars? If you don’t want your bars overly sweet, you can definitely use unsweetened applesauce for this recipe.
Especially since you will already be adding in sugar to the applesauce mixture itself. However, I just had the frozen jars of homemade applesauce I made a few weeks ago.
And they were already sweetened. But, it didn’t make the bars overly sweet in my opinion. I thought they were just rich!
For The Applesauce Filling:
- 1/4 cup butter softened to room temperature
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
For The Cinnamon Spice Crumble:
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoon flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon butter
How To Make Applesauce Bars
Now that you have all your ingredients ready, you can begin to make these yummy bars! First, pre heat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 8×8 square baking pan with cooking spray.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, and salt. Set aside these dry ingredients. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter, sugar, egg, and applesauce.
Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and combine well at medium speed. Remove bowl from stand mixer and pour mixture into baking dish and smooth out the top with the back of a spoon.
To make the cinnamon spice mixture, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter in a small bowl until it becomes soft and crumbly.
This gives the bars just the right amount of spice on top! Sprinkle mixture on top of bars. Bake in preheated oven fro 30-35 minutes, or until bars become a nice golden brown color.
Just be sure that the center of the bars are completely done when baking. It may take a little longer depending on your oven. Mine came out slightly doughy in the center, so just be aware you may need to bake a tad longer if you want to avoid that.
For best results, check the center of the bars with a toothpick to make sure they are completely done. However, I love anything and everything doughy so it didn’t bother me at all!
Store cooled bars at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days and enjoy!
