Materials Needed for DIY Pottery Barn Ghost Dupes
Here is everything you need to transform inexpensive ceramic ghosts into high-end-looking Halloween decorations:
- White ceramic or paintable ghosts
- Black spray paint
- Metallic gold spray paint
- Black acrylic paint
- Small paintbrush
That’s it! You only need a handful of supplies for this easy Halloween craft.

How to Make DIY Pottery Barn Ghosts
Step 1: Find Your Ceramic Ghosts
First, you’ll need some small ceramic or paintable ghost figurines.
I found mine in the Target Dollar Spot, but you could easily recreate this project using ceramic ghosts from a craft store, thrift store, or even inexpensive ghosts you find online.
Don’t worry if they aren’t white. Since we’re going to completely repaint them, the original color doesn’t really matter.

Step 2: Spray Paint the Ghosts Black
Take your ghosts outside or into a well-ventilated area and give them an even coat of black spray paint.
Make sure you cover the entire surface and allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
The black base coat is actually an important part of creating that aged, antique finish.

Step 3: Add Metallic Gold Spray Paint
Once the black paint was completely dry, I lightly sprayed the ghosts with metallic gold spray paint.
The key here is to not completely cover the black paint.
I wanted some of the black to peek through the gold because I was going for an antique gold, aged pottery look rather than a bright, shiny gold finish.
Lightly spraying the metallic paint creates a beautiful layered effect that makes these inexpensive ghosts look much more like high-end Halloween decor.
If you prefer a more glamorous look, you can always add additional coats of gold spray paint until you get the finish you want!

Step 4: Paint the Eyes
After the metallic gold paint was completely dry, I felt like the ghost faces needed a little more definition.
So I grabbed some black acrylic paint and a small paintbrush and carefully painted over the eyes.
This tiny detail really made the faces pop against the antique gold finish.

Step 5: Let Them Dry and Decorate!
And that’s it!
Seriously, how easy is that?!
Once your DIY ghosts are completely dry, they’re ready to style throughout your home.
I love how such a simple paint transformation can completely change the look of inexpensive decor.

How to Style Your DIY Halloween Ghosts
These little ghost figurines would be adorable styled in so many different places around your home.
Try displaying them:
- On a Halloween mantel
- On a bookshelf
- On an entryway table
- On a coffee table
- In a Halloween tablescape
- On a decorative tray
- On a tiered tray
- Along a kitchen counter
- Mixed in with your other fall decor
You could even group several together to create a cute little Halloween ghost vignette.
Create Your Own High-End Halloween Decor for Less
I absolutely love this type of Halloween decor because I prefer spooky cute Halloween decorations over anything that’s too scary or creepy.
These little antique gold ghosts fit that aesthetic perfectly!
They have that vintage, high-end look without being overly spooky, and you would never guess that they started out as inexpensive little ceramic ghosts from the Target Dollar Spot.
And that’s my favorite part about DIY home decor: you don’t have to spend a fortune to make your home look expensive.
For less than $10 and just a few minutes of work, you can create your own Pottery Barn-inspired Halloween decorations that look beautiful and completely unique to your home.
Customize Your DIY Ghosts
Another thing I love about this project is how easy it is to customize.
You don’t have to use gold paint at all!
Try:
- Black for a moody Halloween look
- Silver for a vintage-inspired finish
- Bronze for a warm antique look
- White for minimalist Halloween decor
- Copper for a unique metallic finish
You could even experiment with different paint colors and finishes to create your own version of these DIY ceramic ghost decorations.
