Classic Sweet Potato Casserole
I’m pretty sure it’s not Thanksgiving without this classic recipe. This is a family recipe that has been passed down to me. You just can’t beat the delicious flavors of this dish.
The creamy sweet potatoes, topped with a delicious brown sugar crust, is heaven in your mouth. It may actually taste more like a sweet potato pie recipe to you, without the crust, because it is just so yummy!
This southern classic is the ultimate comfort food and should definitely be apart of your turkey dinner this year. We always have ham and turkey both for Thanksgiving and I think this casserole really pairs well with ham in my opinion.
I’m always usually in charge of making this sweet potato casserole for my husband’s side of the family too. Everybody just seems to love this dish and it really goes with the whole traditional Thanksgiving feast theme! It’s definitely one of the best southern Thanksgiving side dishes for sure!
Broccoli Casserole
I know a lot of people do green bean casserole for Thanksgiving. But honestly, I am not a huge fan of that. I guess because I just love canning fresh green beans and using those instead.
The grocery store canned green beans just don’t do it for me. I should try to make my own version with our homemade canned green beans sometime though and see if I like it better. That would be a fun idea to try for next year.
But anyway, since I’m not a huge green bean casserole fan, I always make a broccoli casserole instead and it is to die for! It’s made with simple ingredients such as fresh broccoli, onion, mayonnaise, shredded cheddar cheese, eggs, and cream of mushroom soup.
This creamy sauce envelops the broccoli well and then to make it even better, it’s topped with a crunchy mixture of Ritz crackers and butter!
The topping is probably my favorite part! This recipe is definitely a family favorite and no Thanksgiving dinner menu is complete without it!
Homemade Cranberry Sauce
If you’re like me and can’t stand the canned stuff of this, then you need to try my homemade cranberry sauce recipe instead! This easy recipe will only take you minutes to make, and you can customize it to however you want.
Trust me, once you try this cranberry sauce, you will never go back to buying canned sauce in the grocery store ever again! This classic dish pairs so well with a roast turkey too! You just can’t beat the combo of turkey and cranberry, right?!
The Dessert Table
Now, for my most favorite part of Thanksgiving, all the desserts! I absolutely love to bake desserts any time of the year, but at Thanksgiving especially! I usually make the same exact recipes every single year because I just love them so much.
This year, I attempted to make some new desserts to add to the menu, but they just weren’t up to par! Thank goodness I made them before so I could test them out. I just can’t get rid of these tried and true favorites below!
Also, if you do a lot of baking like I do, then you need this Caraway Home Baking Set! Basically, anything from Caraway Home is essential for creating these yummy, southern Thanksgiving side dishes! Plus, you can use my coupon code “MORNINGS_ON_MACEDONIA10” to save 10% too!
Pecan Pie Bars
If you love traditional pecan pie, then you will especially love these pecan pie bars even more! With a delicious shortbread crust and a creamy pecan filling, these bars will be a hit at your Thanksgiving dinner!
I think I prefer the shortbread crust way more than the original pie crust too. It really elevates the dish and makes it even more delicious, if that’s possible. And the best part about these bars is that you can make them ahead of time and then freeze them before Thanksgiving!
That’s what I do year after year to save me a little time. I just wrap each bar once they are baked in some Press N Seal wrap, then place them in the freezer.
When I need them, I make sure to sit them in the fridge one day before and let them thaw out overnight. How easy is that?! So much better than scrambling to get everything baked the day of!
Cranberry Bliss Bars
These bars are probably the newest addition to my Thanksgiving menu, but still a favorite nonetheless! I also love how these cranberry bliss bars can be used for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
With classic flavors like cranberry and orange, mixed with white chocolate chips, you just can’t go wrong! They are the perfect ending to any holiday meal. And they pair so well with coffee too. So if you like your desserts with a cup full of Joe, then this is the dessert for you!
You may recognize them from Starbucks originally, but I dare say that my recipe tastes better. Plus, it’s less expensive to just make your own too. And you get a lot more that you can share with loved ones around the table. So it’s a win win!
Pumpkin Pie Bars With Maple Cinnamon Whipped Cream
Okay, last one because I could really go on and on about all the desserts I love to make. But this one in particular is just full of my favorite fall flavors. And again, I prefer this bar version over the traditional pumpkin pie because it also has that yummy shortbread crust to it!
I also love to use the extra whipped cream it makes and add that into my coffee. It has a touch of maple syrup in it and I think that’s what really sets it apart. Such a yummy dessert to make for the holiday! You definitely need to try these pumpkin pie bars this year and let me know what you think!
Enjoy These Southern Thanksgiving Dishes!
Well, I hope you enjoyed this list of all my favorite southern Thanksgiving dishes! I can’t wait to dig into all of them listed above and the Thanksgiving turkey too! I’m also going to try my hand at making a traditional southern cornbread dressing this year too.
Both my Mimi and my mom make a killer dressing, but I have always been too intimidated to try it for myself. So this year, I decided to just bite the bullet and do it! I will of course let you know how it goes and will have to add it to this list for next year too!
No matter what is placed on your southern Thanksgiving tables this year, I just hope you have a wonderful time with your family and loved ones! I just love this time of year and being able to cook and host. Especially after Hurricane Helene hitting our area so hard earlier this fall, I feel like we have even more to be thankful for this year.
I am so blessed that all of our family and friends were okay. And now we all get to sit together and enjoy the best southern food and fellowship! Let me know if you try out any of these classic southern recipes above and what you think about them! And I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving my friends!
